He was a Helen Hay Whitney Post-Doctoral Fellow in the System Biology Department at Harvard Medical School. In 2009, he joined the System Biology Department as an Assistant Professor.

Dr. Springer has a taken an active role in both teaching and research. He c0-developed a course to teach incoming biology graduate students computational skill in 2011, a course that has been taken by well over 1,000 students in person and 30,000 online. He has been funded by NIH, NSF, DARPA, and IARPA. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Springer developed a novel sample collection technology, co-founded a company to deliver this technology, designed a high-throughput testing lab, got EUA approval from the technology, and spearheaded the establishment of the first CLIA certified lab at Harvard. In its first six months of full operation the lab has run over 1.6 million COVID-19 tests. Dr. Springer is excited to work with the community to bring all the tools to the table to take on some of the biggest challenges facing the world today.
